Maya Ruins at Tikal National Park

The Maya ruins in Guatemala’s Tikal archeological site were part of a city which flourished between 3rd and 10th centuries, and which is estimated to have been home to up to 90,000 inhabitants at its highest point. The rulers of Tikal developed relationships with the nearby cities of Teotihuacan to the north (in present-day central Mexico) and Copán to the south (in present-day Honduras). The city collapsed and was eventually abandoned by 11th century, probably due to a combination of increased warfare, overpopulation and environmental decline.
